Home Safety

Our home environments can be a great support to us all but as we age and changes occur to our physical and brain health risks may become more obvious. At the Memory Technology Library the occupational therapists can discuss with you helpful solutions to enhance your home environment and help continued engagement and help reduce risk.

Solutions such as; Organising, decluttering, using signs and prompts, socket covers, timers, lighting and other environmental advice can be discussed based on your concerns. These strategies can be protective for your future and are worth considering.

For family and carers who are caring for someone with a risk of falls and who may require assistance to mobilise there are sensors and alarms that can alert you to potential risk such as bed sensor pad or an exit sensor alarm.

It is advised you discuss this with the occupational therapist to ensure the appropriate response is considered.

Signs and Prompts

Simple signs that prompt you to an activity or reminder can be an easy support to put in place and can combat areas that might be a risk such as a forgetting to turn off the oven. We have a range of signs that can be provided at your visit if it is suitable.

Motion Sensor and Pager

Motion Sensor and Pager is one type of detector that will alert the family member or carer to the person’s movement. This is especially supportive if the person’s mobility is frail and falls are a high risk, the sensor will sound an alarm on the pager to movement, alerting the family member or carer to go a assist.
